With regards to consumers' expectations and awareness of bio-based products we want to bring the experience of the Biobridges project: the survey on consumers' awareness on bio-based products (https://www.biobridges-project.eu/survey-for-consumers-/).
Such activities are of core importance to understand where we are at in terms of public perception of bio-based products.
In case of packaging results (Herbes et al., 2018) show that consumers are mainly interested in good end-of-life options (recyclability, reusability, biodegrability). They are less interested in the renewable origins.
The role of a leader (for example the mayor) is very important and can motivate the whole bureaucratic structure. Sometimes, it is also about the “top-bottom” approach. If the mayor, or a leader of the office is motivated to use bio-based products, things can happen very quickly.
During our MML (jan 2019, Utrecht) start-ups would like to offer good services to teething problems. Problem is not the products to be replaced, but the professional labour to do this.
Subsidies at national. regional and then EU level. We received very often the complaint of stakeholders stating "there is a lack of level playing field between biofuels incentives and all other sectors."
In my opinion, public buyers. We actually discussed this during the MML workshop in Bratislava. Green public procurement can influence demand, but representatives have to reflect the demands coming from the voters, who may or may not motivate them to use green public procurement. For instance, in Bratislava region, the issue of bio-economy and circular economy is relatively very trendy issue among large population (especially among the young generation). They create general bottom-up “demand” for the use of more environment-friendly products. As a consequence, several municipalities in Bratislava took concrete measures and abandoned plastic bottles and cups during their official meetings. They are now promoting it as a fulfilment of the will of their electorate. However, the situation in other Slovak regions is drastically different. People do not care as much about these issues and therefore policy makers do not treat this as a high priority. The suggested solution is to keep on raising awareness among general public.
